Re: Lawson’s Landing, Dillon Beach, Marin County, CA

Dear Mr. Douglas,

When you bring the Lawson's Landing coastal permit application before the Coastal Commissioners, we urge you to recommend the strongest protection for Tomales Dunes.  As you know, Tomales Dunes is a coastal treasure that has been subject to years of unpermitted development and has suffered serious damage to the mobile dunes and wetlands that make it unique in the central coast. The mobile dunes have shrunk from 390 acres in 1954 to less than 170 acres today. The wetlands are drained and trampled. Please ensure that your recommendations to the Commissioners include:

  • identifying all wetlands and sensitive habitats and providing appropriate buffers, as required by the Coastal Act;
  • approving a management plan that mitigates for past unpermitted uses by ensuring that sensitive species and habitats are protected and restored and that deals with the impact of invasive species;
  • requiring timely installation of a new septic system; and
  • guaranteeing that all camping spaces are open to the public, not reserved for a lucky RV owners who hold private long-term leases over prime camping areas.

After nearly half a century of unpermitted uses, we now have the opportunity to restore and protect this extraordinary site for future generations of all species to enjoy.

Sincerely,
