Pine Gulch Restoration is a Win-Win for Farmers and Fish
EAC is excited to see that the Pine Gulch Creek Enhancement project, near Bolinas, is going before the Marin County for public review in the coming weeks. The project is a win-win solution, providing water for local organic farmers and endangered fish during the time of year when each needs it most. Farmers on the creek will be able to store water during high runoff in the winter and spring to be used during the dry summer and fall months. In exchange, Pine Gulch Creek’s in-stream flows will be remain untouched during the second half of the year, improving habitat conditions for endangered salmon and steelhead when water levels are at their lowest. The Pine Gulch Creek project is a great model for finding solutions that benefit both environmental protection and local food production, and it will likely be used to resolve water disputes in other parts of the state as well. The Environmental Action Committee of West Marin is dedicated to ensuring that human activities are in harmony with the area’s irreplaceable wildlife and other natural resources. Therefore, in addition we support Salmon Safe certification for farms and ranches in Marin County as a way to reward fish-friendly agricultural practices and encourage others to make the transition. The Pine Gulch Creek project is a win-win for farmers and endangered fish and EAC supports its approval by the County. Please show your support and contact the Board of Supervisors at bos@co.marin.ca.us or write to 3501 Civic Center Drive , Room 329, San Rafael, CA 94903. Sincerely, Frederick Smith Executive Director Environmental Action Committee of West Marin
