Remove Invasive Species

Remove European beachgrass from Abbott's Lagoon
EAC's primary mission is to protect the native flora and fauna of West Marin. But non-native species seem to be lurking everywhere these days. Green crabs in Tomales Bay, fields of scotch broom on Mount Tamalpais, croaking bullfrogs in Hagmaier Pond. In fact, nonnative species have become such a common part of the landscape that we often overlook the detrimental impacts to native species. Biological communities are an intricate tapestry of ecological relationships among species and between them and the physical environment. Non-native species disrupt that delicate balance. By displacing native species and altering habitats, non-natives can produce a ripple effect through a whole community’s web of interactions. Introducing non-native species into the wild has inherent dangers and potentially fatal consequences. Among the factors contributing to global species loss, the effects of introduced species rank second only to habitat destruction. By working towards the elimination of non-native species in the wild, we are investing in of our native species and communities, our planet’s biodiversity and ecological health, and our own well-being and that of future generations.

EAC is Taking Action:

EAC’s Position on Non-Native Deer in Point Reyes National Seashore

EAC’s board voted unanimously to support the Park’s proposal to eradicate non-native deer from the Point Reyes National Seashore using a combination of lethal means and contraception. We understand the distress this proposal causes many people and we would welcome technology that would make possible the elimination of the herds by contraceptive means alone. Unfortunately, with the rapid increase in non-native deer populations, the Park does not have the luxury of time. For more information click here:
