Restoring Native Habitats & Species

Even in West Marin, where so much land is protected as parks and open space, our native species and habitats have are under threat from over-exploitation, the spread of residential and commercial development, pollution, and competition from aggressive introduced species. EAC is working to protect what remains and to restore what has been damaged.

Tomales Bay Bio-Diversity Inventory

The Tomales Bay Biodiversity Inventory, a collaborative project of the Tomales Bay Watershed Council, Point Reyes National Seashore Association, NOAA, NPS,UC Davis, Audubon Canyon Ranch, the Marin Community Foundation, San Francisco State University, and the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin, seeks to inventory all the species of living organisms in Tomales Bay. With an estimated 10,000 species in Tomales Bay, of which only about a fifth are currently known, many species new to the area and some that are new to science will be discovered. The TBBI will be one of the most comprehensive marine biodiversity surveys of any similarly sized marine system in the world. Results (survey design, database development, organizational structure, educational models, etc.,) will form the foundation for important marine biodiversity and conservation studies elsewhere. The TBBI will serve as a model for marine biodiversity inventories that will contribute to a global effort to conserve biodiversity and natural ecosystems. The partnership will foster collaboration in funding, scientific methods, taxonomic expertise, dissemination of information, community involvement, and educational programs.
