Re: Lawson’s Landing, Dillon Beach, Marin County, CA

Dear Mr. Douglas,

When you bring the Lawson's Landing coastal permit application before the Coastal Commissioners, we urge you to recommend the strongest protection for Tomales Dunes. As you know, Tomales Dunes is a coastal treasure that has been subject to years of unpermitted development and has suffered serious damage to the mobile dunes and wetlands that make it unique in the central coast. The mobile dunes have shrunk from 390 acres in 1954 to less than 170 acres today. The wetlands are drained and trampled by RVs, cars, campers and livestock.

These issues can be addressed and recreation and natural resource protection can co-exist at Lawson's Landing, if any permit is conditioned upon:

  • All wetlands and sensitive habitats being identified and provided with appropriate buffers, as required by the Coastal Act;
  • Past unpermitted uses being mitigated by adoption of a management plan which ensures that sensitive species and habitats are restored and protected and which addresses the problem of invasive species;
  • A new septic system being installed in a timely manner; and
  • All camping spaces being made open to the public, not reserved for those few lucky RV owners who hold private long-term leases over prime camping areas.

After nearly half a century of unpermitted uses, we now have the opportunity to restore and protect this extraordinary site for future generations of all species to enjoy.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
