The inspiration to develop a docent program at Duxbury Reef arose from observation and Marin MPA Watch data collection that indicated public visitation has increased significantly over recent years, with a marked increase in disturbance and poaching of marine life. With the aim of protecting the reef ecology through education, the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin (EAC) in special collaboration with Marin MPA Watch volunteers and Marin County Parks and Open Space has developed Duxbury Docents at Agate Beach County Park and Duxbury Reef.

A team of trained and dedicated volunteers take shifts at low tide to help educate the public about the marine life on the reef and how visitors can help protect the sensitive habitat at Duxbury Reef State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA) through their actions and understanding. EAC manages the volunteer docent program and provides the volunteers with training materials, uniform items, and continued program support. Annually, the program expenses are $20,000.
