Marin Board of Supervisors Consider Offshore Oil and Gas Ordinance

Support Marin County's Ordinance Against Offshore Oil and Gas

It’s time to send in supportive comments to the Marin County Board of Supervisors regarding an important ordinance that expands local control and pushes back on President Trump’s proposed expansion of offshore oil and gas development along the Pacific Coast!

The ordinance will be considered on August 25, 2020 by the Board of Supervisors.

The ordinance requires any new development of onshore facilities to support offshore oil and gas processing plants first be approved by a majority of Marin voters.

This ordinance is significant, as it signifies Marin County’s commitment to keeping our coast and oceans free from harmful oil and gas. This will allow the county to retain local control, which is essential at a time when the Trump administration continues its relentless push to expand both onshore and offshore oil and gas leasing throughout the United States.

The Problem

When the Trump administration announced their terrible plan to expand offshore oil and gas development in 2018, EAC, the Ocean Foundation, and other coalition partners along the West Coast teamed up to Protect the Pacific! We have been advocating for Marin County to update outdated and expired local protections to protect our priceless coastline in Marin County from Trump’s plans, and we are thrilled to see the ordinance moving forward.

Now is the time to ensure lasting local control along our coast! We thought these battles were over when the National Marine Sanctuaries were created; unfortunately, the last four years have reminded us that ensuring local control of our coastline and  health is essential. Our federal sanctuaries remain open to an undefined “review.”

The Trump administration launched a review of offshore leases in 2018. We understand that the federal administration plans to move forward with this ill-conceived plan following the November 2020 election through reporting by Politico.com,

That plan also included an expansion of offshore drilling in California, a move that would escalate the ongoing battles between the state and the administration over environmental issues since Trump took office.
